My Top 3 Places to Visit in Dublin

By Tabula rasa

I visited Dublin last time in autumn 2008. Dublin is the capital of Ireland. In Dublin, 500 000 people live in the City and over 1 million people in the metropolitan area. In addition, six and a half million tourists visit Dublin each year. I have listed the best places to visit in Dublin and will give you some practical information.

Arriving to the City

The Dublin Airport is located 11 km from the city center. The cheapest way from the airport to the city is the local bus company Dublin bus. There are several busses to the center, one-way ticket costs 2 euros and the journey takes about 1 hour. There are also two airport coach companies called Airlink and Aircoach. Their one-way tickets cost 6 to 7 euros and the driving time is about half an hour. If you prefer a taxi, the journey costs about 30 euros and takes about 20 minutes.

Trinity College

1. Trinity College

I chose Trinity College Dublin on my list because it is a famous historical area in the middle of the city. Trinity College is Ireland’s oldest university and it was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I. The university is formally known as the "College of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth near Dublin".

There are three faculties and 15 000 students . The university is ranked the 43rd best worldwide and the 8th best in the Europe. The campus area is full of fantastic architecture. You can enjoy that architecture by watching the photos I have taken.

2. The Old Jameson Distillery

I chose The Old Jameson Distillery on my list because Ireland is famous for their whiskeys. There are many well known whiskey brands, like Bushmills, Powders, Paddy’s, Connemara, Redbreast, Tullamore Dew and, of course, Jameson.

I went to visit The Old Jameson Distillery, which is located in the center of Dublin. There I took part in a distillery tour. The tour was very interesting: they told about the fascinating producing methods of Jameson, which is a traditional Irish whiskey. After the tour it was possible to taste Jameson whiskey in the VIP lounge.

At the beginning of the tour they asked for a few volunteers to take part in a whiskey tasting test. If you pass the test you will be awarded the Official Whiskey Taster Diploma. It is definitely worth trying to take part in it. Unfortunately I was not lucky enough to be among the volunteers but my girl friend was. In the test, there were three glasses of whiskey and you were supposed to recognize Jameson whiskey. The two others were Jack Daniels from the US and Johnny Walker from Scotland.

During the tour they told us about the differences between Irish, American and Scotch Whiskey. By the way, it is quite easy to recognize the differences between those whiskeys when you know which flavor to look for.

The Temple Bar

3. Temple bar

The third place on my list is Temple bar, which is known as Dublin’s cultural quarter. It has a nightlife centre and is popular among tourists. On the area, there are many Irish cultural institutions, as well as the Central Bank of Ireland and the Irish Stock Exchange.

On this centre of nightlife, there are a lot of nightclubs and pubs and one of the pubs is called the Temple Bar. There are also live music performances on the streets in Temple bar. Pubs are very popular in Ireland, for example only in Dublin there are over 1000 pubs.

They also have many widely known beer brands, for example Smithwicks, which is ale and better known brands such as dark stouts like Guinness, Murphy’s and Beamish. The Guinness Storehouse is located in the centre of Dublin. That is a place where you should definitely visit when you are in Dublin. We had to choose between Jameson and Guinness because we did not have enough time for both places so we skipped Guinness this time. I have heard that the Guinness Storehouse is also a great place for a visit. You can drink Guinness on the top floor of the building and watch views over the rooftops.

Hi, Fantastic hub full of information, thank you! I have a friend whose daughter went off to Trinity (all the way from Bradenton, fl) this fall. I've just returned from a trip to see my sister who has a small B&B in Oughterard, Galway - I put my photos up on an old hub I had from a previous stay - if you don't mind, I'll add the link here:
